How switching works

Switching phone systems, without the drama.

Two optional services

Pylon is built for IT teams to run themselves. If you’d rather hand off the work, add either one, or both. You can choose them in the estimate.

Pre-Service Configuration

$3.00 each device, user and voicemail box, one time

We build your system before cutover day: users, groups, voicemail boxes, phones and other devices, call menus, temporary numbers, caller ID and 911 locations.

Or do it yourself: Your IT team builds it in the admin portal after training.

Scheduled Cutover Installation

$43.05 per device, one time

On cutover day we install your phones and test incoming, outgoing and internal calls and 911. If a number transfer is delayed, we forward your numbers to temporary ones and test again.

Or do it yourself: Your team plugs in the phones and runs the tests with our checklist.

Optional services and phones can be paid over 12 months. Phones bought from Pylon come with a 5-year advanced replacement warranty.

What we’ll need from you

  • A list of sites, buildings and the rooms that need phones
  • Your phone numbers, including main, attendance, fax and toll-free lines
  • A phone bill from the last 30 days, and the account number and PIN
  • Who your IT admins are, and who gets 911 notifications
  • A network that meets our requirements

Switching questions

More detail in the guide: switching step by step and keeping your numbers.

How long does switching take?

Usually a single day: we routinely move schools to Pylon in a day, often during school hours, with minimal disruption. Moving your existing numbers takes a few days to a few weeks depending on your current carrier, so we plan the cutover date around it. If your phones are down now, see Phone system down?

Can we keep our phone numbers?

Yes. We transfer (port) your numbers, and your old service stays on until the move is complete. Our guide explains how porting works.

Can you set up and install everything for us?

Yes, for a one-time fee. Pre-Service Configuration ($3 for each device, user and voicemail box) builds your system before cutover day. Scheduled Cutover Installation ($43.05 per device) installs your phones and runs the tests on cutover day. Each is optional, and both can be paid over 12 months. Or your IT team does the work after our training. See how switching works.

Which phones do you support?

Yealink phones set themselves up (zero-touch). Poly, Obihai, Htek, Grandstream and Cisco phones work through DHCP options, and so does nearly anything SIP-compatible. Buy phones from us, with a 5-year advanced replacement warranty, or use compatible phones you already have. See phone prices.

Do you manage our network?

No. Your IT team, or your IT provider, manages your network: cabling, switches and power, VLANs, DHCP, DNS, the firewall, Wi-Fi and your internet service. We check the essentials with you during planning and tell you what we see from our side. See the network requirements.

Can you connect fire alarms or elevator phones?

No. Fire alarm panels, elevator emergency phones and other life-safety lines need specialized, listed equipment. Ask your alarm or elevator vendor about the right connection for those lines.

No sign-up needed. Taxes and fees are estimated up front, and you can share the estimate with your team in one email thread.
